What to look for before buying
- Indoor or outdoor (the IP rating) — It's the most expensive mistake in this category. An indoor camera placed outside lasts until the first heavy rain. Look for IP65 or higher if it will be exposed: that means it resists dust and water jets. And beware of ones that say 'for outdoor use' without stating a rating: the housing can look sturdy without being sealed.
- Resolution: 2 MP, 3 MP or more — 2 MP is Full HD and is enough to see what's happening and recognise someone you know. To read a number plate or identify an unknown face at distance you need 3 MP or more. But watch the hidden cost: more resolution means heavier files, so the memory card fills sooner and it uses more bandwidth if you watch live from your phone.
- Night vision: infrared or colour — Almost all have infrared, which gives a black and white image usually reaching 10 to 30 metres. Colour night vision uses an LED light and helps considerably more for identifying people or vehicles, because colour is information. Also check the stated range: night is when you need it most, and a camera with 10 metres of range won't cover a large yard.
- Motorised (PTZ) or fixed — A motorised camera pans and tilts from the app, so one unit can sweep a whole yard or track movement automatically. A fixed one always looks at the same spot, full stop. Motorised covers far more for the same money, but has moving parts that wear and, while looking one way, it isn't seeing the other.
- Where the recording is stored — It's what almost nobody checks and what decides whether the camera helps when something happens. Most record to a microSD card inside the camera: cheap, but if the camera is stolen so is your evidence. Cloud is safer but almost always a monthly subscription. And an NVR (recorder) is what large kits use. At minimum, check whether the card you need comes separately, because it almost always does.

What to look for

- Motorised covers far more than fixed for the same money.
