How many lumens does a projector need?
Short answer
In a fully dark room, 1000 to 1500 ANSI lumens is enough. With some ambient light you need 2000 to 3000, and to watch in daylight with the blinds open you need 3500 or more. Careful: budget projectors advertise 'LED lumens' or 'source lumens', which run 3 to 5 times higher than real ANSI figures.
Brightness is the most inflated specification in the whole category, and understanding why will save you an expensive disappointment.

The problem: not all “lumens” are lumens
There’s a standard, measurable unit — the ANSI lumen — obtained by measuring real projected brightness on screen at nine points. It’s the only one comparable across brands.
And then there are the numbers many budget units publish:
- “LED lumens” or “source lumens”: the brightness of the bulb before it crosses the panel and the lens. Always vastly higher than what reaches your wall.
- “Brightness lumens”, “peak lumens” and other invented variants: they correspond to no standard at all.
Practical conversion rule: divide the advertised figure by 3 to 5 to estimate the real ANSI value. A projector advertised at 9000 lumens is probably delivering between 1800 and 3000 ANSI.
That doesn’t mean the machine is bad: a real 2000 ANSI in a dark room gives a very enjoyable image. It means you won’t be able to watch it in daylight, however much the box suggests otherwise.
How to spot it before you buy
- If the spec sheet says “ANSI” explicitly, the number is trustworthy.
- If it just says “lumens”, “LED lumens” or an enormous round number (8000, 12,000, 20,000) on an affordably priced unit, that’s a source figure, not ANSI.
- For reference: big-brand projectors with a real 3000 ANSI cost a lot. If you see 12,000 “lumens” at entry-level pricing, the maths doesn’t add up.
The other two factors that change the result
The screen. Projecting onto a white wall works, but a proper projection material with gain returns considerably more light towards the viewer. It’s the cheapest upgrade you can make to a projector you already own.
The image size. The same amount of light spread over more surface means less brightness per square metre. A projector that looks good at 80 inches can look washed out at 120. If your unit is short on brightness, shrinking the image improves it instantly.
When a projector isn’t the answer
If your plan is watching television during the day in a bright living room, a TV will give you a better picture for less money. A projector shines — literally — when you can darken the room and want a very large image: films, series at night, matches with friends, projection in the yard. In that context, a modest unit performs spectacularly.

Why does my 8000-lumen projector look dim?
Because those 8000 almost certainly aren't ANSI lumens. Budget manufacturers publish the brightness of the light source before it passes through the optics, the panel and the lens, or use invented units like 'LED lumens' or 'brightness lumens'. The rough conversion is to divide by 3 to 5 to reach the real ANSI figure. A projector advertised at 8000 lumens probably delivers between 1600 and 2600 ANSI — a perfectly usable machine at night, but not what the box implies.
Is it any good in daylight?
Only with genuinely high brightness and some light control. A projector competes against ambient light: the more light in the room, the more the image washes out. With 3500 ANSI lumens or more and blackout curtains partly closed you can watch in daylight at acceptable quality. With a budget unit delivering a real 1500 ANSI and the blinds open you'll see a washed-out image with no blacks. The honest rule: a projector is a device for watching at night or in a darkened room; if you need daytime viewing, a TV will give you a better result for less money.
Does resolution or brightness matter more?
Brightness, by some distance. A washed-out 4K image looks bad; a Full HD image with good contrast and enough brightness looks great. On top of that, most budget projectors claiming 4K actually have a lower-resolution panel that accepts a 4K signal and rescales it: you aren't seeing real 4K. If you're choosing between a model promising more resolution and one with more verifiable ANSI lumens, go for the brightness.
