Quick verdict
For most people the double Multiflex Confort is the most balanced buy: medium-density foam, standard size and an accessible price to renew the whole bed. For a small double, the Multiflex Sol is the cheapest; and for hotel-grade sprung quality, the Simmons Hotel Bilt queen.
What to look for before buying
- Foam or springs — It's the biggest difference in feel. High-density foam is firm, silent, doesn't transmit movement from the other side of the bed and has no metal parts to sag. Springs give more bounce and ventilate better, noticeable in summer, but transmit more movement and can start creaking over the years. For medium weight and a limited budget, good-density foam performs extremely well.
- Foam density — It's the number that decides whether the mattress sags in two years or lasts ten, and it's rarely on display. Density is measured in kg/m³: below 25 is soft and short-lived; 25 to 30 is the normal-use range; above 30 is high density, firm and durable. When a listing says only 'high density' without the number, it's worth asking.
- Maximum supported weight — It's the most honest figure for knowing whether a divan will last. A mattress designed for 80 kg per side and used with more weight sags in the middle far sooner. Look for the stated weight per side and leave margin: for a couple with a good combined weight, a budget divan will show marks within a few years however much the foam claims high density.
- Size (and matching your sheets) — In Argentina: single 80x190, wide single 100x190, double 140x190, queen 160x200 and king 200x200. Check length as well as width: if either of you is over 1.80 m, 190 cm falls short and you need queen or king, which come in 200. And sheets aren't interchangeable between sizes: add a new set to the budget.
- Base: drawers, upholstered or on legs — A divan is base plus mattress, and the base changes the experience a lot. Bases with drawers solve storage in small flats, but they're heavy and hard to move. Legged bases leave the space underneath free for loose storage and make cleaning easier. And watch total height: added to the mattress, it decides whether you sit comfortably on the edge of the bed.

A divan bed is base plus mattress in one product, which is why it usually works out cheaper than buying both separately. The decision comes down to three things: size, foam or springs and density.
What to look for
- Size: wide single 100x190 · double 140x190 · queen 160x200 · king 200x200. If either of you is over 1.80 m, 190 cm falls short.
- Foam or springs: foam is firm and silent; springs ventilate better and take more weight.
- Density: under 25 kg/m³ marks quickly · 25-30 normal use · over 30 high density.
- Stated weight capacity: the most honest figure on how many years it will last.
Our pick
For most people the double Multiflex Confort is the most sensible buy: it renews base and mattress in one go, at an accessible price. For a single room, the wide single Multiflex Sol. And for the real quality step up, the Simmons Hotel Bilt queen.
On density, which is rarely on display
“High density” is a phrase that appears in almost every listing. The number is what matters, not the phrase: below 25 kg/m³ the mattress sags within a couple of years. If the listing doesn’t give the number, ask before buying.
Two things that add to the budget
- Sheets aren’t interchangeable between sizes. Moving from double to queen means a new set.
- The base wears too. Putting a new mattress on a worn base makes it mark early.

Frequently asked
Foam or springs?
It depends on weight, heat and budget. High-density foam is firm, silent, doesn't transmit movement from the other side of the bed and has no springs to sag: for one or two people of medium weight it's a very solid purchase and considerably cheaper. Springs, especially individual pocket springs, give more bounce, ventilate better in summer and take more weight without sagging, but cost more and can start creaking over the years. If you sleep hot or you're heavier, springs are justified; if not, good foam delivers a lot for the money.
What foam density do I need?
Density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre and it's the figure that decides how many years it lasts. Below 25 kg/m³ is soft foam that marks quickly: fine for a guest bed used occasionally. Between 25 and 30 is the normal daily-use range for medium weight. Above 30 is high density, firm and durable, and it's what you want if you're a larger build or you want the mattress to last many years. Be wary of listings that say high density without giving the number.
Divan or mattress and base separately?
A complete divan, base plus mattress, is almost always cheaper than buying both separately and guarantees the sizes match exactly. Separating makes sense in two cases: if you already have a base or bed frame in good condition and only need a new mattress, or if you want a mattress considerably above the grade offered in the bundle. One detail: the base wears too, so replacing only the mattress on a worn base makes the new mattress mark sooner.
