What WiFi router do I need for my home?

Short answer

For a flat or a small house, a dual-band router is enough. For a large house, two storeys or thick walls, a mesh system of several nodes beats a single router, because there the problem isn't power but coverage. And if you use the router your provider left you, replacing it usually improves the signal noticeably.

Choosing a router is complicated because the boxes are full of huge numbers that barely matter. The real decision is simpler and comes down to one thing: the problem you have. Is it speed or coverage? The answer changes everything.

First, identify your problem

  • “WiFi is slow where I’m sitting” → a speed problem. A good router solves it.
  • “There are rooms where WiFi doesn’t reach or cuts out” → a coverage problem. No single router fixes it. You need mesh.

Confusing the two is the most common mistake: buying the most expensive router to solve a coverage problem, and still having no signal at the back of the house.

Dual-band: today’s minimum

A dual-band router broadcasts on two frequencies:

  • 2.4 GHz — reaches further and through walls, but slower and more congested.
  • 5 GHz — much faster, but shorter range.

Each device connects to whichever suits it. It’s the minimum worth buying today; single-band ones are outdated.

WiFi 6: matters for quantity, not speed

WiFi 6 doesn’t make a single device faster. What it does well is handle many devices at once without them clashing.

  • Home with 3-4 connected things → a good WiFi 5 is enough.
  • Home with 10-15 things (phones, TVs, cameras, smart bulbs, robot) → WiFi 6 shows.
