What's the difference between LED, QLED and OLED?
Short answer
LED and QLED are the same underlying technology (an LCD panel lit from behind); QLED adds a quantum dot layer that gives it more brightness and more vivid colour. OLED is something else entirely: each pixel makes its own light, so it can switch off completely and achieve perfect blacks and a contrast neither of the other two can match.
Display acronyms are built to confuse, and the confusion is deliberate: LED and QLED are close relatives; OLED is a different family, however similar the four letters look.

LED: the standard
An LCD panel with an LED backlight shining through it. It’s what the vast majority of TVs sold today use, and it works well.
Its structural limitation: because the light comes from behind and is always on, black is never black. It’s a dark grey, because some light leaks through the panel. In a night scene it shows as a greyish haze.
QLED: same principle, more brightness and colour
It’s an LED with an extra layer of quantum dots, particles that emit a very pure colour when hit by light. The result: more brightness and noticeably more saturated colours.
It still has a backlight, so it carries the same black-level limitation as LED. But in practice, and especially in rooms with light, it’s an upgrade you notice a lot and one that no longer costs a fortune. It’s the best balance point for most bright living rooms.
OLED: every pixel is its own lamp
There’s no backlight here. Each of the millions of pixels generates its own light and can switch off completely. That gives you:
- Absolute black, not grey. A night sky actually looks black.
- Infinite contrast, which is what makes a picture look three-dimensional.
- Perfect viewing angles: the picture doesn’t wash out even from far off to the side, which matters if several of you share a wide sofa.
- An extremely thin panel, almost bezel-free.
In exchange: it costs considerably more, its peak brightness is lower than a good QLED’s, and it carries a low but real burn-in risk with static images.
How to decide without getting lost
- Is your TV in a very bright room, or do you watch a lot during the day? → QLED.
- Can you darken the room, do you mostly watch at night, and want the best picture possible? → OLED.
- Is it your first 4K set and you want the best value? → a good LED or an entry QLED. The jump from what you had will be enormous anyway.
And one piece of advice worth more than the acronyms: every one of them is 4K. Between two 4K TVs of the same size, what will make you say “that looks better” is the panel type and the brightness, not the pixels.

Which looks best in a bright living room?
QLED, by a clear margin. Brightness is its strength: in a room with big windows or where you watch during the day, a QLED keeps colours vivid and the picture readable while a dimmer panel washes out. OLED has a better picture in absolute terms, but its peak brightness is lower and in a very bright room it loses part of its advantage. If your TV is in a bright living room and you watch a lot during the day, QLED. If you can darken the room and watch at night, OLED.
Does OLED still burn in with static images?
The risk exists but has been greatly reduced. Burn-in is the permanent mark a static image can leave after hundreds of hours: a news channel logo, a video game health bar, the interface of a PC used as a monitor. Current OLEDs ship with mitigations (pixel shifting, panel refresh cycles, logo dimming) and for normal TV viewing with varied content it isn't a practical problem. Where it's worth thinking twice is if you'll use the TV as a PC monitor all day or leave it for hours on a channel with a fixed banner.
Is the price difference worth it?
It depends where you're starting. Going from plain LED to QLED is the upgrade you notice most for the least money, especially if you watch during the day: more brightness and colour, and QLED now exists at very accessible prices. Going from QLED to OLED is a genuine step up — perfect blacks, infinite contrast, perfect viewing angles — but it costs considerably more and you only benefit in a room with controlled light. If it's your first 4K set and budget matters, a good LED or QLED will leave you very happy.
