How much RAM do I need in a laptop?
Short answer
For work, 16 GB is today's reasonable minimum: a browser with several tabs, a video-call app and a spreadsheet already use 7 to 8 GB. With 8 GB you'll always be at the limit; 16 GB keeps the laptop comfortable for years and is the upgrade with the best price-to-benefit ratio.
It’s the most underestimated spec when buying a laptop, and the one that makes a machine feel “old” fastest. A three-year-old processor is still perfectly usable; 8 GB of RAM in 2026, less so.

Why 8 GB no longer works for a work machine
This isn’t sales exaggeration. Let’s add up a normal day:
- Windows 11 idle: ~3 GB
- Browser with 15 tabs: 2 to 4 GB (modern web apps eat more)
- Teams / Zoom / Meet on a call: 1 to 1.5 GB
- Excel with a mid-size file: 0.5 to 1 GB
You’re already between 7 and 9 GB without having opened anything unusual. With 8 GB installed, the system starts moving things to disk to make room, and that is exactly the moment the laptop feels slow: windows lag, switching apps becomes heavy, the browser reloads tabs you already had open.
With 16 GB, that same working day leaves memory to spare and the machine feels instant.
The practical rule when buying
Between two laptops at the same price — one with a faster processor and 8 GB, and one with a slightly slower processor and 16 GB — take the 16 GB.
For office use the processor is rarely the bottleneck; memory is. And this matters doubly if the RAM is soldered, because in that case there’s no second chance.
Check whether it’s upgradeable before you buy
Many budget models and almost all ultrathins have the memory soldered to the board: it can never be changed. Others have a free slot or a replaceable module.
Before deciding, search the exact model together with “soldered RAM” or “upgrade RAM”. If it’s upgradeable, you have room to start smaller and grow. If it isn’t, the decision you make at purchase is permanent for the life of the machine.
And the spec that goes with it: the SSD
RAM is no use if the disk is slow. An SSD is non-negotiable in a new laptop: it’s the difference between booting in 10 seconds and two minutes. Any current machine has one; what to check is capacity. 256 GB fills up fast if you keep photos or work files, and 512 GB is the comfortable size.

The difference between 8 and 16 GB, on the other hand, is felt every day in how smoothly you switch between applications. The only exception is sustained heavy work — rendering, compiling, editing — where the processor does rule.
