What to look for before buying
- Navigation: sensors vs. laser mapping — This is the biggest difference between a cheap robot and a good one. Sensor models bounce around at random: they clean, but take twice as long and miss areas. Laser (LiDAR) models build a floor plan and run in parallel lines, so they finish sooner, don't repeat and can be sent to one specific room.
- Suction power (Pa) — Measured in pascals. Up to 2500 Pa is fine for hard floors and dust. If you have rugs or shedding pets, look for 4000 Pa or more: below that, hair stays stuck in the rug and the robot rolls right over it.
- Mopping function — Almost all include a water tank with a cloth. It's good for daily upkeep of hard floors: it lifts footprints and fine dust. What it doesn't do is scrub stuck-on dirt, whatever the advertising implies. It's a wipe, not a proper mop.
- Runtime and recharging — For a two-room flat, 90 minutes is enough. For a large house you need it to return to the dock, charge and resume where it left off: without recharge-and-resume, in a big house it never completes a full pass.
- App and scheduling — This is what turns the robot into something you actually use. A good app lets you set schedules, define no-go zones (the pet area, the cables under the desk) and see the map. Known brands have far more stable apps than generics.

Is laser mapping worth it?
Yes — it's the upgrade you notice most and the one that most justifies the price difference. A sensor robot bumps and turns at random: it cleans, but takes much longer, repeats areas and misses corners. A laser one builds a plan of your home, runs in orderly lines, knows where it has already been and returns to the dock on its own. It also lets you tell it via the app to clean only the kitchen, or to stay out of the bedroom. If your home has more than one room, it's the feature that changes the experience most.
Does it work with pets and rugs?
Yes, but check the suction. Pet hair in a rug needs force: below 4000 Pa the robot passes over and the hair stays put. A rubber main brush (rather than bristles) also helps, because long hair tangles far less and you're not cutting it free with scissors every week. And set a no-go zone around the food bowl: robots and water dishes don't mix.
Does the mopping actually clean?
It's for upkeep, not deep cleaning. The damp cloth lifts fine dust and footprints, and on a floor that's already reasonably clean the result is very noticeable. What it won't do is remove a stuck-on stain or replace mopping with detergent: it has neither the pressure nor the water for that. Think of it as a daily wipe that means you properly mop far less often.
